There’s something truly magical about the North Yorkshire landscape. Unlike its more famous siblings, such as Devon and Cornwall, it remains modest and almost secretive—despite boasting an equally breathtaking coast, rugged moors, and rolling hills blanketed in rich heather. These natural features create the perfect dramatic backdrop for a cinematic style, even on the darkest of winter days and Danby Castle Barn is perfectly located, right in the heart of the moors.

Having admired the stunning photography from Glencoe, it occurred to me that North Yorkshire offers a similarly rugged and raw beauty. With its untamed scenery, it’s an ideal location for wedding portraits that mirror the striking atmosphere you might find further north—without the hassle of traveling across the border.

Once I envisioned the concept, there was no more perfect venue to bring this vision to life than Danby Castle Barn. Steeped in history and nestled deep within the heart of the Yorkshire Moors, Danby Castle Barn provides the ideal setting for a winter wedding—something many venues would struggle to offer. The rolling mist and grey skies here only add to the charm, where most other venues might seem bleak.

With the incredible support of some of the region’s most talented suppliers—Emma from Rosemary Blooms (Florist), Kim from Ambience Venue Styling Malton, and Wendy from Silver Sixpence (Curvy Bridal Boutique)—we created a romantic vibe that was drenched in drama and nostalgic echoes of days gone by. The nudes paired with the deep rich tones and pop of black in the styling and florals really appealed to me in terms of creating something unique and non-traditional and provides a slight nod to the dark romantic appeal of its local town Whitby which is famous for hosting Goth weekend and for being the location where Dracula was imagined and written.

The English Rose Couple were the icing on the cake showcasing that emotion can be conveyed in the simplest of gestures telling a story of true love and passion without forced smiles or gimmicky posing.
